Even by adhering to a low-sugar diet and maintaining a diligent regimen of daily brushing and flossing, the odds are good that you will get a cavity. Studies show that nine out of every 10 Americans deal with tooth decay at some point in your life.

If—or when—you get a cavity, your Orange City family dentist Dr. Terry Soule can restore your tooth to its original form and function by placing a filling.

The office of Terry Soule, DDS, uses two types of fillings: amalgam, and composite fillings.

Amalgam Fillings

You may have seen amalgam fillings referred to as silver fillings or metal fillings. Used in dentistry for more than a century to repair areas of decay, these fillings actually are made from a combination of mercury, silver, tin, and copper.

In addition to being a time-tested treatment option, amalgam fillings also are less expensive than composite fillings, and usually are covered by most dental insurance plans. They are durable enough to withstand significant biting pressure and usually will last at least 10 to 15 years.

Composite Fillings

Advances in dental science have made composite fillings more prevalent—and preferred in many treatment situations. These fillings are made up of a filler comprised of glass and/or quartz, mixed with a resin medium.

Many patients choose a composite filling over an amalgam filling, for any combination of the following reasons:

  • Composite fillings will not expand and contract as much in response to the normal temperature changes that take place in the mouth every time you eat and drink.
  • Composite fillings can be matched to the color of your other healthy surrounding teeth, allowing the restored tooth to blend seamlessly into the mouth.
  • Composite fillings are metal-free—ideal for patients who suffer from a metal allergy.
  • Composite filings require less of your existing tooth structure to be removed during the preparation process.

What can I expect during the installation of a filling?

Regardless of the type of filling you choose, we can complete the procedure in a single appointment at our Orange City office. First, a local anesthetic is administered. Next, Dr. Soule will remove any area of decay and any of the tooth structure that has been damaged by the decay. After your tooth is cleaned and prepared, the filling is placed and sculpted to match the shape of your other teeth.

Amalgam fillings set within a few minutes and composite resin is hardened by the use of a special curing light. Afterward, a quick polish will complete the process.
