candidate for sedation dentistryServing areas of DeBary, Orange City, and Deltona FL

If you are fearful of going to the dentist, then sedation dentistry may be right for you. However, it may not be the best solution for every patient. Dr. Terry Soule, sedation dentist in Orange City, would like to share with you some insight regarding sedation dentistry, how it works, and when it is recommended. Keep in mind that the only sure way of knowing whether you are a candidate is to receive an evaluation by Dr. Soule.

Sedation Dentistry offered by Terry Soule, DDS

Nitrous Oxide: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a mask that is worn over the nose. This chemical compound helps the patient feel calm, and even diminishes their awareness of what is going on around them. However, even while under its effects, you will remain awake, and able to breathe on your own. You also should be able to communicate with us. You will just feel extremely relaxed and carefree during your procedure. Once the flow of the nitrous oxide is cut off, it takes only minutes for the effects to dissipate and for you to feel yourself again.

Conscious Sedation: This form of sedation involves taking a prescription sedative about 30 minutes before your appointment. It provides a deeper state of relaxation, and you likely are not going to remember your procedure. You will remain awake throughout your treatment, and aware of your surroundings, however. With this type of sedation, it is best to have someone drive you to and from your appointment, and even sit with you back at home until the effects of the medication wear off.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

If you suffer from dental anxiety or experience the feeling of fear at the thoughts of going to see your dentist, then you might be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Sometimes, candidates aren’t necessarily afraid of the dentist, but maybe they have a difficult time sitting still or keeping their mouth open for lengthy procedures. If this sounds like you, then sedation dentistry may be a good option.

Certain pre-existing conditions also can make sedation dentistry a good choice, such as:

  • Resistance to local anesthesia
  • Highly sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty holding jaws open during lengthy dental procedures
  • Problems maintaining muscle control for extended periods of time
  • Neck and back pain that may make it difficult to remain in the dental chair for a prolonged amount of time
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw pain or dysfunction

What may disqualify me from being a candidate for sedation dentistry?

Certain health reasons can prevent a person from undergoing sedation dentistry.

These reasons include:

  • Pregnancy
  • An allergy to sedatives
  • Glaucoma
  • Depression of the central nervous system
  • Resistance to medications
  • Elevated blood pressure

While this is not a complete list of reasons sedation dentistry may not be a good fit for you, we recommend that you discuss your complete health history with Dr. Soule during your consultation so that he can address these concerns, and possibly explore other options to help you relax for your upcoming appointment.
